KASTEEL OOST WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER

Not every couple wants a marquee in a British field. For some, the dream is a little further afield — a genuine European castle, centuries of history in the walls, and a day that feels like stepping into a fairytale rather than just booking a venue. Kasteel Oost, in the Dutch town of Valkenburg, is exactly that kind of place, and it’s fast becoming one of the most striking destination wedding settings in the Netherlands.

About Kasteel Oost

Kasteel Oost sits on the banks of the Geul river on the edge of Valkenburg, in the rolling hills of southern Limburg. The estate dates back to the sixteenth century, and its distinctive ochre-coloured façade — the look the castle carries today — dates from a major renovation in 1836. It’s had a genuinely varied past, passing through generations of noble families, functioning at different points as an agricultural school and a literary centre, before Valkenburg itself transformed it into a dedicated wedding venue in 1978. The first couple said their vows there on 26 August that year, and it’s been a wedding destination ever since. In 2024, the estate was taken on by Ramona Koonings — owner of the world’s largest bridal store — who has developed it into a complete four-star hotel, restaurant, and event destination, with a Koonings bridal boutique housed inside the castle itself. It’s a rare thing: a genuine historic monument where a couple can find their dress and say their vows in the same building.

Why it suits a destination wedding so well

The appeal of Kasteel Oost for couples travelling from abroad is that almost everything happens on one site. The castle gardens and orangery — a glass-walled space wrapped in greenery — give a choice of ceremony and reception settings that shift from romantic and classic to airy and botanical. The in-house restaurant, Mon Rêve, handles the wedding dinner, and the estate has its own wedding planner and master of ceremonies on hand to manage the day, which matters enormously when you’re planning a wedding in a country you don’t live in. Guests can also stay overnight, with the bridal suite offering couples a proper wedding night at the venue itself rather than a transfer elsewhere. The venue comfortably accommodates anything from an intimate 60-guest ceremony up to a full 120-person celebration, so it flexes well whatever size day you’re picturing.

A venue built for photography

The gardens are one of Kasteel Oost’s real strengths — broad lawns, fountains, and colour everywhere from the planting, in that particular Dutch way of doing gardens beautifully without overdoing it. Spending time photographing the venue, it became clear how well the space holds up whatever the weather does — on one visit the rain came down hard for a stretch, and it barely mattered, because between the gardens, the orangery, and the grand interior rooms, there’s always another beautiful space to move into. The orangery in particular has some of the loveliest natural light I’ve come across for portraits, whether shooting inside among the glass and greenery or just outside it. Beyond that, the castle offers grand rooms furnished with genuine period pieces alongside more modern spaces like the bridal suite — a wonderful range to shoot across, from centuries-old elegance to something fresh and current, all within the same building.

Documentary wedding photography at a European castle

My approach stays the same wherever I’m photographing — letting a day tell its own story as it unfolds, with a handful of guided portraits woven in rather than everything staged. A setting this romantic doesn’t need much help; it mostly needs someone documenting it honestly, with an eye for the quieter details alongside the obvious ones. The images throughout this post were taken at Kasteel Oost and give a genuine sense of what the venue offers a couple choosing it for their day.

The Netherlands has always meant something personal to me, too — my mother is Dutch, so photographing weddings here feels less like taking a UK service abroad and more like bringing two places I actually belong to together.

If you’re a UK couple considering a European destination wedding — at Kasteel Oost or elsewhere in the Netherlands — I’d love to talk through what that looks like logistically and creatively. Get in touch to find out more.
