A Timeless Spring Wedding at Rackleys Chiltern Hills
Some venues sit quietly in the landscape; Rackleys Chiltern Hills is one of them. Tucked into the beech woodland above Cadmore End, on the Buckinghamshire border, it’s the kind of place that lets a wedding day breathe — timber, glass and rolling chalk hills doing most of the talking. Megan & James’s March wedding needed exactly that kind of backdrop: relaxed, a little playful, and entirely their own.
Getting Ready — Bridal Suite & The Piggery
The morning started in two very different corners of the venue — Megan and her six bridesmaids getting ready in the bridal suite, hair by Becky Davis of BMD Hair Co, with a flower girl in her element, while James and his six groomsmen held court at The Piggery. Two separate camps, same nervous energy, both building toward 2.30.
A First Look with Dad
Before any of the formal portraits, Megan asked for a quieter moment first — a first look with her dad and bridemaids, away from the rest of the day. It’s a small request that says a lot about how she wanted the day to feel: real emotion first, everything else second.
The Ceremony & Confetti
Over sixt guests filled the room for a 2.30 ceremony — no readings, no fuss, just two people getting on with the business of marrying each other. Afterwards, Megan and James disappeared upstairs for fifteen minutes with a glass of something cold, just the two of them, while I arranged the confetti line and the noise of the afternoon caught up with them.
Golden Hour Portraits & Family Groups
With the light doing its best work around golden hour, we slipped away for portraits in the grounds — the Chiltern Hills doing exactly what they do best in low spring sun. Family groups came together in between (Megan and James have a wonderfully large family between them), before everyone regrouped for the wedding breakfast.
Speeches & the Wedding Breakfast
Four speeches opened the wedding breakfast — Megan’s dad Paul, best man Luke, maid of honour Kylah, and James himself — including a quiet, unscripted moment as Paul handed Megan a gift mid-speech: a Sooty teddy bear, a nod to the Sooty & Sweep show she adored as a little girl. It’s the kind of detail that’s easy to miss if you’re not looking for it, and exactly the kind of moment we’re there to catch.
Evening Celebrations
By half seven the evening crowd had arrived, the Photo Stars UK photobooth was set up, and the cake was cut not long after. From there it was a straight run to the first dance and a dancefloor that didn’t empty until midnight — exactly the “capture it, don’t stage it” day Megan and James asked for.
